The Instructional Designer for the Distance Education Department (DED) and Teaching and Learning Center at Jackson State Community College is responsible for designing and developing engaging, interactive, and instructionally sound materials for fully online learning courses. This role involves creating media-rich content that enhances student-to-instructor, student-to-student, and student-to-content learning, ultimately aiming to increase student retention. The Instructional Designer will utilize course management systems' retention tools and reports to identify and track at-risk online students, ensuring that they receive the necessary support to succeed in their courses. In this position, the Instructional Designer will spend approximately 75% of their time designing interactive, accessible, and student-centered instructional materials. This includes providing course development support to faculty, conducting workshops, and offering one-on-one training on curriculum design. The role also involves assisting in the improvement of JSCC's online program to meet and maintain compliance with SACS standards. To further enhance student retention, the Instructional Designer will develop rubrics in consultation with Deans to track adherence to department-wide academic standards and course competencies in online courses. The remaining 25% of the role will focus on identifying, monitoring, and tracking the progress of at-risk online students through the course management system. The Instructional Designer will assist in the collection, analysis, and reporting of student retention data, prepare reports as requested for JSCC, TBR, and/or SACS, and serve on committees as needed or requested. Additionally, the Instructional Designer will assume responsibility for other duties and projects as assigned by their supervisor.
