About the position

The Instructional Designer position at Emeritus involves designing online and blended certificate programs in collaboration with university partners. The role is part of the Global Design Team, which is responsible for developing high-quality course offerings that meet world-class standards. The designer will work closely with faculty to create engaging learning experiences and ensure that programs align with real-world job skills.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with university faculty and staff on the design of digital and blended learning experiences for courses and projects.
  • Conduct Backward Design sessions with faculty to anchor program learning outcomes against real-world job skills.
  • Define and design key course elements, including observable, measurable learning outcomes, performance competencies, and assessments.
  • Coordinate with the Global Design team and Global Delivery team to ensure smooth course design and operations.
  • Provide guidance to faculty on evidence-based instructional design best practices.
  • Adhere to course design schedules and quality assurance standards.
  • Contribute to positive faculty relationships with a collaborative approach.
  • Deliver against deadlines in a fast-paced, global environment with multiple stakeholders.
  • Advocate for learners to ensure programs create value for them.
  • Stay current with research and trends in instructional design and learning technology.
  • Support peers and contribute positively to the Global Design team culture.
  • Manage the work of support contractors, such as subject matter experts and beta testers.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two years of experience working with faculty in higher education.
  • Detailed knowledge of evidence-based instructional design practices and processes.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Backward Design and needs analysis.
  • Knowledge of assessment and evaluation methods, and analysis of learner performance data.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Close attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for faculty filming.
  • Willingness to work occasional off-hours, depending on geographical location of faculty.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Instructional Design, Education, Educational Psychology, or related field.
  • Demonstrated skill working with online learning tools and software.
  • Experience designing or converting courses for online delivery.
  • Familiarity with Learning Management Systems.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards.
  • Familiarity with course design quality standards (e.g., Quality Matters).
  • Experience with quality assurance and quality control processes.
