About the position

The Instructional Designer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is responsible for collaborating with faculty and teaching staff to develop innovative course materials and activities for various learning environments, including classroom, web-based, and online formats. This role focuses on enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes through effective instructional design practices and the integration of technology in education. The designer will also contribute to curricular processes and quality improvements in teaching methods across the School of Nursing's educational programs.

Responsibilities

  • Designs and develops evidence-based, technology-rich courses and programs, interactive exercises, assessments, and online course components.
  • Provides instructional design expertise for course design and redesign projects in nursing courses and programs.
  • Supports faculty in utilizing the current learning management system to enhance workflow and increase student engagement with course materials.
  • Advocates for exceptional visual design and user experience for faculty and students.
  • Applies research-based principles and standards for high-quality online, face-to-face, blended, hybrid, or hyflex courses.
  • Works with the EdTech unit of IIT to advise and assist faculty in the design, development, and implementation of technology that supports teaching and learning.
  • Partners with faculty to translate course content into design solutions, including presentations, infographics, and animations.
  • Provides training, workshops, and support to faculty, students, and staff.
  • Consults with stakeholders on needs assessment, course design/redesign, or implementation of procedures to assess technologies and techniques in teaching and learning.
  • Participates in other School of Nursing-related projects and initiatives as assigned.

Requirements

  • Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; a Bachelor's degree with 3+ years of relevant experience may be accepted in substitution.
  • Three+ years' experience working directly with academic faculty and teaching staff in course development.
  • Knowledge of learning technologies, instructional design theories, and practices.
  • Master's degree in education, instructional design, educational technology, or related discipline with coursework in curriculum development or learning theory.
  • Experience using and creating content for learning management systems (e.g., Moodle, Canvas).
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
  • Experience using various instructional technologies to create learning materials.
  • Ability to establish and maintain high-quality working relationships with stakeholders, faculty, and staff.
  • Knowledge of best practices in online learning environments and experience designing online learning elements.
  • Experience managing multiple projects and meeting deadlines.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of and experience with Quality Matters (QM) Higher Education Rubric.
  • Knowledge of best practices regarding accessibility standards (Sections 504 & 508, updated WCAG 2.2) and copyright laws in course design.
  • Experience designing online or face-to-face courses.
  • Ability to use various technologies (e.g., Panopto, Zoom, Padlet, Qualtrics).
  • Ability to evaluate emerging trends in educational modalities.
