About the position

The University of Maine at Presque Isle is seeking an Instructional Designer to enhance student learning pathways through effective design practices and accessibility. This role involves collaborating with faculty and administration to develop and deliver training and tutorials for distance education, utilizing various media tools within the Learning Management System (LMS). The position aims to improve the quality of instruction and student experience across all teaching modalities, under the guidance of the Center for Teaching and Learning Instructional Design team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a solid working knowledge of UMPI-specific design priorities and strategic initiatives.
  • Be a leader in contemporary learning theory in a higher education context.
  • Work one-on-one and in groups with faculty and staff to support course creation, revision, and assessment.
  • Provide synchronous and asynchronous LMS/instructional technology support for faculty users.
  • Collaborate with CTL and UMS System staff on various committees, tests, and troubleshooting.
  • Provide direct support and training development and communicate support needs to the CTL Director.
  • Assist faculty and work-study students with developing campus-specific job aides, videos, and web-based resources.
  • Assist in updating and maintaining the student-facing support Site and the Center for Teaching & Learning's primary WordPress site.
  • Assist faculty and student interest groups in developing multimedia content, including video and podcast production.
  • Advocate for Universal Design for Learning and designing for accessibility.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education, instructional technology, multimedia design, or a related area.
  • Two years of recent experience with various types of computer software, including MS Office and Google suite.
  • Recent experience designing a Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Experience with teaching and/or tutoring.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to rapidly learn various software applications and platforms.
  • Knowledge of current in-person, hybrid, and digital pedagogy, and a basic understanding of UDL.
  • Ability to work with non-technical clients in a positive manner.
  • Ability to translate content into accessible multimedia formats.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a project team.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Education, or related field.
  • Previous teaching experience in higher education.
  • Knowledge of principles of adult learning and/or CBE delivery.
  • Experience with administering an LMS.
  • Experience applying learning theories and models in course design.
  • Experience with platforms like Brightspace, Zoom, Kaltura, Adobe Creative Suite, and WordPress.
