About the position

The Instructional Designer at the University of San Francisco (USF) plays a crucial role in enhancing the educational experience for both faculty and students. The Instructional Design team is dedicated to supporting full-time and adjunct faculty in designing or redesigning their courses and instructional strategies, utilizing research-based best practices across various instructional formats, including face-to-face, hybrid, HyFlex, and online synchronous and asynchronous instruction. This team is part of the Educational Technology Services (ETS) department within Information Technologies Services, which also encompasses Learning Spaces Engineering, Instructional Technology and Training, and Media Services. As an Instructional Designer, you will collaborate closely with faculty members to create inclusive and engaging teaching and learning experiences. This involves integrating instructional design principles, learning theories, and effective educational technologies. You will manage or assist in the management of course design and development for multiple courses each semester, ensuring that they meet the university's quality and compliance standards. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include developing and conducting faculty development training, partnering with faculty to align course outcomes with assessments, and overseeing the production of multimedia course content. In addition to direct course design support, the Instructional Designer will engage in faculty development initiatives, working alongside the Instructional Design team and other ETS colleagues to provide programming that promotes effective instructional strategies and the use of educational technologies. This may involve organizing workshops, creating educational resources, and participating in events such as the USF Ed Tech Expo. The role also includes contributing to special projects and resource development as needed, making it a dynamic and impactful position within the university's educational framework.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with faculty to design, develop, and deliver inclusive and engaging teaching and learning experiences.
  • Manage or support the management of course design and development for hybrid, HyFlex, online synchronous, and online asynchronous courses.
  • Develop and conduct faculty development training and consultations.
  • Ensure alignment between program and course outcomes and assessments.
  • Contribute to the development of course content in the Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Oversee the production and integration of multimedia course content.
  • Review courses against university quality and compliance standards.
  • Provide instructional design consultations and course design support to faculty as requested.
  • Partner with other ETS colleagues to provide faculty development programming around instructional design principles and effective use of educational technologies.
  • Lead or contribute to special projects, reports, newsletters, and promotional materials.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education, communications, computer science, information systems, or a closely related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in designing and developing online synchronous and asynchronous learning experiences and courses.
  • 2+ years of experience working with faculty or subject matter experts on course design and development.
  • Knowledge of instructional design principles including Backwards Design and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
  • Proficiency in designing and developing engaging in-person and online learning activities and content.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to manage projects in a highly organized fashion with attention to detail.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in instructional design or related areas.
  • Familiarity with Quality Matters Rubric.
  • Experience teaching in K-12 or Higher Education, either in-person or online.
  • Experience in providing faculty development.
