About the position

The Instructional Designer position at NC State University is a vital role within the Digital Education and Learning Technology Applications (DELTA) department. This position is responsible for advancing the integration and support of learning technologies in academic programs and courses, both on campus and at a distance. The Instructional Designer will work closely with faculty, media developers, project coordinators, and other instructional professionals to design and develop courses and learning tools that are effective and engaging. The role requires a collaborative and team-oriented approach, as the Instructional Designer will be part of a team that provides leadership in research-based instructional design, including the creation of learning materials and assessment techniques. The Instructional Designer will report to the Director for Instructional Design & Development and will be involved in various aspects of course production projects, including online and distance education course development, blended/hybrid learning design, and instructional tool creation. The position emphasizes the importance of building positive relationships across units and campuses to further DELTA's strategic goals. The Instructional Designer will also consult with faculty on needs assessments, course redesign, and the evaluation of instructional technologies and techniques. In addition to designing and developing effective courses, the Instructional Designer will be responsible for gathering and reporting evidence of the impact of instructional innovations on student success and departmental efficiency. The role also involves staying current with trends in instructional design and contributing to outreach initiatives through consultations, presentations, and workshops.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop effective courses, including web content, interactive exercises, assessments, and online communication mechanisms in collaboration with faculty and other instructional professionals.
  • Provide leadership and project management for assigned course production projects, including Online and Distance Education course development and enhancement.
  • Provide instructional design expertise for online and blended/hybrid course development.
  • Partner with DELTA colleagues, faculty, and other content experts to develop innovative and pedagogically sound solutions for instructional challenges.
  • Build positive cross-unit and cross-campus working relationships to advance DELTA's strategic goals.
  • Consult with faculty on needs assessment, course redesign, and evaluation of instructional technologies and techniques.
  • Guide faculty members in the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of effective courses and instructional programs.
  • Apply and assist in the dissemination of research-based principles and standards for quality online, face-to-face, and blended course design.
  • Gather and report on evidence of the impact of instructional innovations on student success and departmental efficiency.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in education, design, technology, or a related field.
  • Experience designing and producing online course materials such as instructional websites, digital graphics, and online resources.
  • Experience in managing individual projects, including prioritizing work to meet timelines and milestones.
  • Experience in using and developing content for online course management systems (e.g., Moodle, Canvas).
  • Experience in using an array of instructional technologies, including multimedia technologies and e-learning authoring software.
  • Excellent interpersonal and business communication skills, including written and presentational abilities.
  • Ability to establish collegial relationships with faculty and staff.
  • Ability to work in a team production environment and multidisciplinary design process.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies related to teaching and learning.
  • High level of independence and initiative.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge and experience with the Quality Matters (QM) Higher Education Rubric, including course certifications and QM workshop facilitation.
  • Awareness of usability and accessibility considerations in instructional design.
  • Two years of experience working with faculty in a higher education setting or SMEs in a commercial setting.
  • Experience in designing and developing complete distance education courses using distributed/distance technologies.
  • Experience with blended/hybrid learning design and large-course redesign approaches.
  • Demonstrated success in the development of instructional multimedia.
  • Proficiency in using multimedia hardware, software, and equipment.
