About the position

The Instructional Designer at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) plays a crucial role in the development and delivery of online courses, ensuring that both traditional and adult learners receive high-quality educational experiences. This position operates within a consultative model, collaborating closely with faculty to create engaging online, hybrid, and web-enhanced courses. The Instructional Designer is responsible for recommending best practices in instructional design and technology adoption, thereby enhancing teaching and learning outcomes across the university. In this role, the Instructional Designer will focus on maintaining consistency and efficiency in course design while researching and implementing new technologies and pedagogical strategies. Key responsibilities include conducting course quality reviews to ensure adherence to best instructional practices and accessibility standards, providing training opportunities for faculty, and staying informed about current trends in online learning. The Instructional Designer will also be instrumental in fostering a collaborative environment, working with faculty to integrate academic technology effectively into their courses. The position is situated within the Office of Distance Education and eLearning, which is part of the Teaching, Learning & Library Services (TLLS) division. This unit is dedicated to supporting faculty in the development of online courses and enhancing the overall educational experience for students. The Instructional Designer will contribute to the university's mission of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service, while also promoting a vibrant academic community that values diversity and inclusion.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of online course design and delivery.
  • Recommend best practices for instructional design for traditional and adult learners.
  • Collaborate with faculty to create high-quality online, hybrid, and web-enhanced courses.
  • Ensure effective use of academic technology in enhancing teaching and learning.
  • Research new technologies and pedagogies to support instructional design.
  • Conduct course quality reviews for best instructional practices and accessibility.
  • Provide training opportunities to faculty on instructional design and technology use.
  • Stay informed about current trends in online learning.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Educational Technology, or a related field with comparable work experience in Instructional Design.
  • Experience supporting, designing, developing, and delivering online, hybrid, and/or web-enhanced courses.
  • Experience with teaching and training.
  • Experience converting face-to-face instruction to online/hybrid instruction and/or designing instruction for online learning.
  • Familiarity with various instructional methods, assessment strategies, and instructional technology solutions.
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information in user-friendly terms.
  • Efficient project management skills.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to use a wide array of multimedia tools.
  • Understanding of accessibility principles and creating accessible content for online learning.
  • Understanding of quality-driven online course principles such as Quality Matters/OLC Scorecard.
