About the position

The Instructional Designer at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) plays a crucial role in enhancing the educational experience for both faculty and students. Under the guidance of the Associate Provost for Online Programs, the Instructional Designer is responsible for collaborating with faculty to research, analyze, implement, evaluate, and support the effective use of technology in both online and face-to-face learning environments. This position is engaged in a variety of instructional activities aimed at improving understanding, increasing engagement, and accelerating student learning outcomes. The Instructional Designer will assist faculty in the design and development of courses across multiple delivery modes, including face-to-face, blended, and online formats. The role involves direct assistance and advanced consultation with faculty on instructional design, utilizing Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Canvas, and other teaching and learning technologies. The Instructional Designer will conduct presentations, workshops, and individualized meetings with faculty to discuss instructional design, pedagogy, assessment, and the application of instructional technology. Creativity and resourcefulness are essential, as the position requires the ability to handle complex instructional design tasks with minimal supervision while managing multiple assignments concurrently. The Instructional Designer will also provide guidance to other members of the Office of Online Programs regarding instructional technology issues and collaborate with faculty to assess and improve student learning outcomes. In addition to these responsibilities, the Instructional Designer will stay current with emerging technologies and trends in pedagogy, providing support to the university community in implementing new technologies to enhance teaching and learning spaces. The position may also involve working on specialized and complex projects as assigned, contributing to the overall mission of NJIT to foster an inclusive and effective learning environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist, consult, and provide direct outreach to faculty in the analysis, design, development, implementation, and assessment of courses and instructional experiences.
  • Provide instructional design, consultation, support, and project management to faculty for the conversion of courses to online and technology-assisted educational venues.
  • Conduct proactive consultations with faculty to identify course outcomes and content, draft storyboards, and develop course content as needed.
  • Create, design, and lead presentations, workshops, discussions, and individualized meetings with faculty on instructional design and pedagogy.
  • Support faculty in delivering instruction in multiple modes and provide strategies for managing student learning in digital environments.
  • Collaborate with faculty to create technology-mediated learning experiences integrating various media and emerging web tools.
  • Assist faculty in discovering methods to improve instruction with and without technology.
  • Partner with various university departments to assess and improve student learning outcomes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education, instructional design, or a related field.
  • Several years of experience working in higher education.
  • Expertise with a learning management system (LMS).
  • Experience working with faculty both one-on-one and in group settings.
  • Experience designing and leading training workshops.
  • Proven ability to create instructional content using digital tools.
  • Demonstrated creativity and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Experience working with Canvas, WebEx, and Kaltura.
  • Experience designing and developing face-to-face or online courses.
  • Teaching experience at the college level.
