About the position

The Instructional Technologist at Southern Methodist University (SMU) is responsible for collaborating with the Online Production Services Team's Online Learning Experience (OLE) Designer to develop engaging online course materials in Canvas, the Learning Management System. This full-time, on-campus position focuses on enhancing online learning experiences by ensuring course accessibility and adherence to quality standards, while also providing support and training to faculty. The role requires a commitment to innovative online learning techniques and effective course design, contributing to the overall educational mission of SMU.

Responsibilities

  • Work with OLE Designer and faculty to design and implement innovative and effective online learning techniques.
  • Revise existing courses for online delivery in collaboration with faculty.
  • Create instructional materials such as courses, curriculum, student guides, or training manuals.
  • Coordinate efforts and report progress to course production project managers and leadership.
  • Update documents for tracking and reporting purposes.
  • Advise, train, and support faculty on Canvas elements to achieve course learning objectives.
  • Assist in developing assessment tools and strategies aligned with course learning objectives.
  • Ensure course content is accessible and adheres to Quality Matters standards.
  • Coordinate activities with faculty throughout the course development life-cycle.
  • Assist with copying course content into new course shells or terms.
  • Develop proficiency in SMU instructional technologies as needed.
  • Perform regular course accessibility checks according to institutional requirements.
  • Maintain awareness of updates to Canvas and related technology tools.
  • Coordinate with and supervise STAR students assisting in accessibility work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree is required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience is required.
  • Experience in Learning Management Systems is preferred.
  • Two years of demonstrated experience in an academic or training environment building course content for online delivery.
  • Familiarity with adult learning theories and learning outcome assessment techniques is required.
  • Working knowledge of learning management systems (e.g., Canvas) for instruction is necessary.
