About the position

The University of Chicago is seeking an Instructional Professor in Korean Studies at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. This full-time teaching position involves teaching six courses per year, including four in the East Asian Civilizations sequence and two focused on Korean History. The role also includes advising BA theses and contributing to Korea-related programming at the Center for East Asian Studies. The appointment is for an initial term of three to five years, with a start date no later than September 2025, and is renewable based on performance review.

Responsibilities

  • Teach a total of six courses per year, including four in the East Asian Civilizations sequence and two on Korean History.
  • Develop Korean History courses in consultation with the Undergraduate Studies Committee and faculty members.
  • Advise BA theses and independent research projects on Korea-related topics.
  • Contribute to Korea-related programming at the Center for East Asian Studies.

Requirements

  • Completion of all requirements for the PhD degree by the appointment date of September 2025.
  • Record of undergraduate teaching experience with an emphasis on innovative teaching approaches.
  • Broad training in Korean and East Asian history, including premodern and early modern periods.
