About the position

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication and Communication Studies at The University of Iowa is seeking a part-time Instructional Services Specialist/KRIU Operations Manager. This position is designed to provide comprehensive administrative oversight for the operations of KRUI, the university's student-run radio station, and its production facilities. The successful candidate will serve as the primary advisor and point-of-contact for KRUI's student directors, staff, and volunteers, ensuring effective communication and collaboration among all parties involved. Additionally, the role includes providing instruction and mentorship to KRUI staff and students enrolled in relevant courses within the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and Communication Studies. In this role, the Instructional Services Specialist will be responsible for designing, creating, developing, and evaluating instructional or artistic materials that enhance the educational experience of students. The position also involves assessing the instructional effectiveness of various strategies and pedagogical approaches employed within the station. The successful candidate will manage an instructional support facility, which includes financial and administrative responsibilities, and will apply established policies and practices for planning and administering budgets and managing expenses effectively. As a station advisor, the individual will coordinate with the Division of Student Life human resources to interview, hire, and manage student directors, while also assisting in the development and implementation of station policies. This position requires a commitment to fostering a supportive and educational environment for students, ensuring that they receive the guidance and resources necessary to succeed in their roles at KRUI.

Responsibilities

  • Provide administrative oversight for KRUI station operations and production facilities.
  • Serve as primary advisor and point-of-contact for KRUI student directors, staff, and volunteers.
  • Provide instruction and mentorship to KRUI staff and UI undergraduate students in relevant courses.
  • Design, create, develop, and evaluate instructional or artistic materials.
  • Evaluate the instructional effectiveness of strategies and pedagogical approaches used.
  • Manage an instructional support facility, including financial and administrative responsibilities.
  • Apply policies and practices for planning and administering a budget and managing expenses.
  • Serve as a station advisor to KRUI student staff and volunteers.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in an appropriate discipline or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience leading and managing teams.
  • Knowledge/experience of audio and video production and multimedia creation workflows.
  • Experience successfully managing complex projects and initiatives with competing deadlines.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply policies and practices for planning and administering a budget and managing expenses.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Experience maintaining, updating, and replacing technology within a radio station or similar environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with and mentoring students and/or interns in a higher education setting.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as part of the 20-hour weekly schedule.
  • Experience working with university ITS and external groups and/or vendors to resolve hardware and software-based problems.
  • Experience with fundraising and/or resource development.
  • Working knowledge of FCC regulations and radio frequency operations or reporting to government bodies.
