About the position

The Instructional Support Specialist at Bret Harte Middle School is a specialized role within the Special Education department, focusing on providing educational support to students with disabilities. This position involves implementing behavioral interventions, facilitating access to the common core curriculum, and addressing the physical needs of students as required. The role is designed to support students in moving towards less restrictive educational environments and offers a pathway for staff to transition into certificated teaching positions. The specialist will work closely with teachers and other educational professionals to enhance student learning and behavior management.

Responsibilities

  • Provide core curriculum instruction and behavior intervention to students with disabilities under the guidance of a certificated teacher.
  • Support students in meeting their IEP goals and objectives.
  • Participate in Individual Educational Plan (IEP) meetings and assist in implementing behavior intervention plans.
  • Help manage student behavior and intervene in crisis situations when necessary.
  • Collaborate with teachers and staff to modify general education curriculum as needed for students with disabilities.
  • Maintain detailed records and data logs regarding student progress and behavior interventions.
  • Assist in classroom management and support teachers in instructional activities.
  • Administer and monitor tests and assignments, ensuring a reliable testing environment.
  • Provide basic first aid and specialized health care as needed.
  • Attend meetings and professional development workshops.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or a related behavioral science.
  • 40 hours of training in Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA).
  • Certification in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or willingness to obtain it.
  • At least one year of experience working in an educational setting with students presenting behavioral challenges.
  • Experience implementing intensive behavioral intervention programs.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certificates.
  • Valid California Driver's License.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with students with emotional disturbances, autism, or intellectual disabilities.
  • Knowledge of Common Core Standards and special education regulations.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office and other educational technology.
