About the position

The Instructor for Adult Basic Education and Literacy (ESL/ABE/HSE/IET/EL Civics) is responsible for delivering quality instruction to adult learners, focusing on various educational methodologies to support their learning goals. This role encompasses teaching, academic advising, professional development, and community service, with an emphasis on integrating meaningful activities that facilitate workforce training and employment skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide ABE activities and instruction from pre-literacy through elementary levels, including reading, mathematics, communication skills, and digital literacy.
  • Deliver ASE activities and instruction comparable to secondary high school competencies.
  • Assist students in earning the TxCHSE by preparing them for TASC, HiSET, or GED tests.
  • Support English Language Learners through ESL activities aimed at achieving competence in English.
  • Provide Integrated EL Civics instruction to adult English Language Learners, including professionals with degrees from their native countries.
  • Teach literacy, ESL, and civic participation skills to students.
  • Guide students in career and college planning, including goal setting and employment awareness.
  • Conduct AEL instruction alongside Workforce Preparation Activities for in-demand occupations.
  • Facilitate Distance Learning activities for remote instruction.
  • Instruct students on Financial Literacy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required.
  • One year of teaching experience required, preferably with adult students in a multi-level setting.
  • Experience with curriculum development is preferred.
  • Knowledge of instructional methods in Andragogy is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Texas Teaching Certificate preferred.
  • Experience working with a diverse population is preferred.
