About the position

The Biology Instructor position at Gateway Community & Technical College is a full-time faculty role focused on teaching introductory biology courses. The instructor will work collaboratively with students and faculty to meet educational needs, promote student engagement, and support the success of general education courses. This role requires flexibility in teaching schedules and methodologies, including daytime and evening classes across various campuses.

Responsibilities

  • Use learner-centered pedagogical strategies to engage a diverse population of learners.
  • Develop written syllabi/course outlines and course material.
  • Use both formative and summative assessments to monitor students' academic achievements.
  • Prepare and grade assignments, quizzes, and exams.
  • Set up and maintain safe laboratory experiences in accordance with regulatory procedures and policies.
  • Work with the Dean of Arts & Sciences and support staff to order supplies within the allocated budget.
  • Promote a positive work and learning environment through words and actions.
  • Stay current with new developments and research in the field and in teaching and learning by collaborating with peers and attending seminars, conferences, and/or workshops.
  • Maintain office hours to provide quality academic advising and assistance to students.
  • Engage in the academic life of the college by participating in community and campus committees and projects.
  • Mentor part-time biology faculty.
  • Teach assigned schedule, which may include various times, days, campuses, and delivery modalities and fulfill assigned role(s) for course management.
  • Promote the transferability of GCTC's general education coursework to public four-year institutions through collaborative partnerships.
  • Participate and work within the state and local biology curriculum committee guidelines to ensure program quality is maintained at the highest level.
  • Provide requested reports and other information as needed to meet the mission of both the Division of Arts and Sciences and the college.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or equivalent in Biological Sciences.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Excellent organizational skills; high attention to detail; independent; self-motivated; able to work in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate with many individuals at all levels throughout the internal college environment and external business and community partners, representing himself/herself professionally and courteously.
  • Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to multi-task, work under deadlines, and prioritize projects to meet deadlines with high levels of efficiency and accuracy.
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, Forms, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and Word).

Nice-to-haves

  • Doctoral degree or equivalent in Biological Sciences.
  • At least two years of relevant teaching experience.
  • Experience in and understanding of working with students from diverse populations.
  • Experience working at the community college level.
