About the position

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking an Instructor/Lecturer/Teaching Assistant Professor for the Program in Jewish Culture and Society. This position involves teaching Hebrew and developing the Hebrew program, with a preference for candidates who can also teach Hebrew literature, Israeli culture, Yiddish, or other relevant courses in Jewish Studies. The role is non-tenure track and full-time, with a focus on proficiency-based language instruction and curricular development.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Hebrew language courses and develop the Hebrew program.
  • Design an effective, proficiency-based two-year language sequence.
  • Train and supervise instructors with little or no previous teaching experience.
  • Contribute to the curriculum beyond one's own classroom.
  • Engage in research that complements teaching responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Hebrew language, Hebrew literature, Second Language Acquisition, or related field for Instructor position.
  • Ph.D. in relevant field for Lecturer and Teaching Assistant Professor positions.
  • Professional level proficiency in Hebrew and English.
  • Record of effective language teaching at the college level or in a non-college setting.
  • Ability to design proficiency-based language instruction.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced graduate work in Hebrew or a closely related field.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness through student evaluations.
  • Experience in curricular/program development.
