About the position

The Instrument Controller Specialist role at IBM involves serving as a subject matter expert for scientific computation devices within an Intramural Research program. The specialist will support scientific research staff by managing specialized scientific equipment and software, ensuring effective deployment, configuration, and ongoing support of these devices. This position requires collaboration with scientists and vendors to meet critical operational needs and conduct formal software validation.

Responsibilities

  • Learn, document, and support Scientific Computation Devices.
  • Assist scientists and vendors in the deployment and configuration of Scientific Computation Devices.
  • Support the configuration of scientific applications running on Scientific Computation Devices.
  • Conduct formal software validation and define user roles and access rules.
  • Perform formal audits of COTS vendor manuals and processes.

Requirements

  • Experience supporting desktop versions of MS Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Unix, and embedded operating systems.
  • Experience with installation and configuration of peripheral equipment.
  • Experience with laboratory sciences and familiarity with ServiceNow (2 years).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with scientific computing devices such as MRI Machines, PACS Systems, and various types of microscopes.
  • Basic knowledge of IT technical areas including Security, Networking, Hardware and Peripherals, Storage, Database & Application (2 years).
  • Experience with intermediate programming, scripting skills, and High-Performance Computing environments.
