About the position

BWXT is currently seeking an Instrumentation and Control (I&C) System Design Engineer for its Advanced Technologies location in Lynchburg, VA. This position is integral to the development of innovative nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems. The successful candidate will work in a collaborative team environment, contributing to a variety of projects that require a broad, multi-disciplined background in instrumentation and control systems as well as electrical systems. The role involves selecting and specifying I&C hardware, including sensors, PLCs, processors, I/O devices, and embedded controllers. The engineer will develop algorithms, architectures, and requirements for control systems, ensuring that all designs meet relevant system and interface requirements. Responsibilities also include preparing design documentation such as requirements specifications, control narratives, and system design descriptions. The engineer will provide oversight of vendors implementing components and systems to BWXT specifications and will collaborate on the creation and presentation of technical briefings. Problem-solving is a key aspect of this role, as the engineer will need to recognize and recommend solutions to technical challenges while coordinating with other interfacing disciplines such as mechanical engineers and test engineers. This position is located in the Lynchburg, VA Advanced Technologies office, and relocation benefits are available. Responsibilities

  • Select and specify I&C hardware, including sensors, PLCs, processors, I/O devices and embedded controllers.
  • Develop algorithms, architectures, and requirements for control systems.
  • Utilize relevant system requirements and interface requirements to prepare appropriate input design documentation.
  • Develop design documents, including requirements specifications, control narratives, and system design descriptions.
  • Provide oversight of vendors implementing components and systems to BWXT specifications.
  • Collaborate on the creation, development, and presentation of technical briefings.
  • Recognize and solve problems. Recommend solutions to technical problems.
  • Coordinate with other interfacing disciplines such as mechanical engineers, electromagnetic design engineers, system design engineers, and test engineers.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in Engineering (e.g. Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering or other related discipline) is required.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of related experience is required.
  • Must have design experience in instrumentation, data acquisition, and/or control systems.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills including technical writing.
  • Familiarity with standard MS Office applications is required.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced degree in a STEM discipline.
  • System modeling and simulation experience in Flownex or Simulink and exposure to SysML.
  • Expertise in autonomous control algorithms and systems.
  • Familiarity with Systems Engineering principles and tools including INCOSE guidelines, DOORs and model-based systems engineering.
  • Ability to design, develop, and/or specify sensors for extreme operating environments.
  • Familiarity with nuclear power plants and/or radioisotope systems.
  • Familiarity with electrical distribution system design and analysis including ETAP.
  • Active DOD or DOE security clearance.
