About the position

As an Instrumentation & Controls Engineer - Project Lead for Nuclear Projects at Sargent & Lundy, you will play a pivotal role in the advancement of nuclear power as a carbon-free energy source. This position is integral to our electric power generation clients who are digitizing their existing power plants and constructing new nuclear facilities, including small modular reactors (SMR). You will be part of a dynamic team within the Instrumentation and Controls Engineering group, focusing on major process controls engineering projects that encompass design, operational excellence, safety, maintenance, and project management. In this role, you will have the opportunity to direct technical decision-making within a collaborative project team environment. You will work alongside other engineers and designers on the design, modification, and analysis of both new and existing power plant control systems, with a particular emphasis on digital upgrades. Your assignments will be challenging and varied, requiring you to investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve a wide range of instrumentation and controls engineering issues. Your responsibilities will include coordinating systems design activities to ensure compliance with specifications, codes, and client requirements. You will engage in Digital Systems Design Development, focusing on PLC, DCS, HSI, networked computer systems, and digital instrumentation and control systems functional requirements for nuclear plant systems. Additionally, you will collaborate on quality assessments and critical digital reviews, perform consulting-level work for digital IoT, and lead strategic first-of-a-kind (FOAK) projects within the nuclear industry. You will also be responsible for preparing and reviewing detailed calculations, including scaling, uncertainty, and setpoint calculations for both analog and digital controls applications. Documentation preparation for design input, including master diagrams and schematics, will be a key part of your role. You will interface with vendors to prepare and review materials and equipment purchase specifications, and you will prepare reports and studies that present technical information clearly and concisely to meet client requirements. Furthermore, you will conduct independent reviews of work performed by others, including calculations and drawing preparation, and attend client meetings and site walkdowns to validate scope and ensure client satisfaction. Supporting station outage activities as required will also be part of your responsibilities.
