About the position

Stantec is seeking a mid to senior level Instrumentation and Controls Engineer to join our dynamic team. This role is integral to our Water business, where we view the interaction with water as a holistic system rather than isolated networks. As part of a multidisciplinary group of engineers and designers, the successful candidate will provide technical services to both public and private sector clients, focusing on control systems engineering, process control strategy planning, and automation designs. The position involves working on projects related to water and wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations, where the engineer will be responsible for equipment selection, communication network layouts, and process control design coordination with other engineering disciplines. The successful applicant will engage in various marketing support activities, including assisting the marketing team with project pursuit strategies and developing presentation materials. In terms of design activities, the engineer will develop preliminary scope definitions, budgets, and staffing plans, conduct field reviews of existing equipment and control systems, and prepare studies and technical memorandums. The role also includes developing construction documents such as Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), control panel details, and wiring diagrams, as well as reviewing electrical schematic diagrams and coordinating I&C deliverables with other disciplines. Additionally, the engineer will provide procurement support by preparing instrument datasheets and reviewing contractor submittals. During construction, the engineer will conduct site inspections, support equipment commissioning, and assist with troubleshooting. The role requires a commitment to safety and adherence to company health and safety guidelines. Responsibilities

  • Provide technical services in control systems engineering and process control strategy planning.
  • Design automation systems for water and wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations.
  • Conduct field reviews and evaluations of existing equipment and control systems.
  • Prepare studies, conceptual reports, and technical memorandums related to I&C engineering.
  • Develop construction documents including P&IDs, control panel details, and wiring diagrams.
  • Assist the marketing team with project pursuit strategies and presentation materials.
  • Review and evaluate electrical schematic diagrams and mechanical specifications with controls content.
  • Support multi-disciplinary teams with engineering design projects and studies.
  • Prepare instrument datasheets and review contractor submittals.
  • Provide engineering services during construction, including site inspections and equipment commissioning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemical Engineering is required; MS preferred.
  • 6 years of experience in instrumentation and controls engineering.
  • PE license in Control Systems or Electrical Engineering or the ability to obtain within 18 months of hire date is required.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to convey project needs to managers and clients.
  • Ability to mentor junior staff and work with team members in different locations.
  • Solid interpersonal skills for working in a team environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with PLC, HMI, and SCADA system planning and design.
  • Familiarity with construction cost estimates and procurement processes.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
