About the position

The Instrumentation Engineer I will play a crucial role in supporting the process electrical and instrumentation team at Clayco. This position is focused on ensuring that instrumentation for design and build projects is properly designed, specified, and procured. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing regular status updates related to project schedules and budgets, ensuring that all aspects of instrumentation engineering are aligned with project goals and timelines. In this role, the engineer will support the development of Process Flow Diagrams and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), which are essential for the design and implementation of instrumentation systems. The engineer will prepare instrument specifications in close coordination with process engineers, ensuring that all instrumentation meets the necessary requirements for functionality and safety. Additionally, the engineer will be responsible for sizing process instrumentation, developing Instrument and Input/Output (IO) lists, and reviewing bids from instrumentation suppliers to ensure competitive pricing and quality. The position also involves producing instrument location plans and details, reviewing 3D piping models to ensure proper installation and accessibility, and assessing fabrication, construction, and installation requirements. The engineer will review vendor drawings and packaged systems, participate in internal and external review sessions, and perform contractor Requests for Information (RFI) and submittal reviews. Furthermore, the engineer will participate in cost estimating tasks to support project budgeting and financial planning.

Responsibilities

  • Support Process Flow Diagrams and P&ID development.
  • Prepare instrument specifications in coordination with process engineers.
  • Responsible for sizing process instrumentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Chemical Engineering.
  • Completion of the fundamentals of engineering (FE) exam is a plus.
  • Minimum 2-5 years of instrumentation engineering experience.
  • Experience with certification and code requirements (Awareness of Electrical Codes & Standards; IEC, NEC, UL for components certification, ISA, ASME, ANSI).
  • Knowledge of hazardous area design.
  • Must be knowledgeable in the use of computer software (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, AutoCAD).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to travel.
