About the position

The Instrumentation Engineer III will be a key member of the multidisciplinary UW-Madison Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment team, focusing on the development of an electronics system for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) operations. This role involves conceptualizing, designing, optimizing, constructing, testing, and improving large-scale instrumentation systems, particularly those based on Advanced Telecommunications Architecture (ATCA) and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). The successful candidate will lead firmware development for the HL-LHC CMS Trigger Upgrade project, ensuring the integration of complex systems and providing support for algorithm developers.

Responsibilities

  • Conceptualizes, designs, optimizes, constructs, tests, and improves unique, large-scale instrumentation systems used in scientific research.
  • Provides innovative and strategic expertise in instrumentation systems, utilizing computer design applications for modeling and analysis.
  • Acts as the main expert point of contact for stakeholders, identifying problems and providing solutions throughout project development.
  • Leads research and development of new processes and techniques for advanced instrumentation systems in collaboration with scientists.
  • Prepares and presents reports on design status and technical research to various professional organizations and review boards.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert on new instrumentation system specifications and designs, participating in grant and contract proposals.
  • Provides training to staff and external experts on developed systems and related technologies.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Eight or more years of professional working experience in large-scale instrumentation systems based on ATCA and FPGAs.
