About the position
The Insurance Billing Specialist at the University of Southern California (USC) is responsible for ensuring accurate billing and coding practices within the organization. This role involves reviewing and resolving claim edits, submitting claims promptly, and serving as a liaison between various departments to address billing issues. The specialist must maintain professionalism and compassion while assisting patients with billing inquiries and insurance coverage determinations.
Responsibilities
- Maintain current understanding of billing and coding guidelines to ensure proper claims billing.
- Review and resolve claim edits in the billing scrubber for all payers.
- Submit claims within 48 to 72 hours of creation date.
- Coordinate rebill requests from internal departments and vendors.
- Serve as a liaison between Revenue Cycle areas and the billing agency to resolve claim edits.
- Assist patients and callers with billing questions and insurance coverage determinations.
- Document all calls and actions in the follow-up system, confirming and updating necessary information.
- Demonstrate ability to deescalate matters and provide customers with options to problem solve.
- Partner with patients on financial assistance and establish payment arrangements within hospital policies.
- Identify opportunities for improvement and implement effective solutions.
- Provide quality service and support to patients and client groups.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of two (2) years experience in medical insurance billing required, preferably in facility billing.
Nice-to-haves
- Certified Coding Specialist - CCS (AHIMA) Billing and Coding Certificate preferred.
