About the position

The Insurance Examiner position at FEMA involves working within the Resilience, Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration to apply National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) laws and regulations. The role focuses on issuing and processing complex insurance policies, providing expert evaluations, and developing procedural manuals related to flood insurance matters. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex regulations while contributing to the overall mission of FEMA in emergency management.

Responsibilities

  • Preparing and reviewing directives, guidelines, forms, and other documents regarding flood insurance matters.
  • Working with contractor staff to develop and document practice and procedure manuals, including the NFIP Claims Manual and the Flood Insurance Manual.
  • Reviewing, analyzing, and recommending management procedures and policy revisions covering various insurance issues.
  • Providing expert evaluations of special projects relating to procedural materials, claims manuals, and other matters upon request.
  • Making recommendations on amendments and revisions to regulations, procedures, and practices pertaining to insurance coverage and claims.
  • Preparing Rules and Regulations that implement the intent and directions of Congress in the conduct and scope of the NFIP.
  • Exercising independent judgment in interpreting guides, resolving complex issues, and developing applications to specific areas of work.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship is required to apply for this position.
  • Must successfully pass a background investigation for Public Trust.
  • Selective Service registration is required.
  • Current federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Government credit card.
  • Ability to deploy with little or no advance notice to anywhere in the U.S. and its territories for extended periods.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in underwriting property insurance or conducting oversight of insurance underwriting operations as a business analyst/technical expert.
  • Providing programmatic advice to senior-level officials.
