About the position

The Insurance Referral Specialist is responsible for processing patient referrals to and from healthcare practices, ensuring that patients receive necessary information regarding their referrals before their appointments. This role involves verifying insurance coverage, obtaining necessary patient records, and coordinating with clinical staff to schedule appointments effectively.

Responsibilities

• Evaluates and schedules new patient referrals, communicating with referring organizations and patients about appointment details.
• Reviews content of new patient referrals and obtains appropriate records, scanning/uploading them to the EMR prior to scheduling appointments.
• Accesses internal and external EMR systems to obtain patient records for the department.
• Collaborates with clinical staff to evaluate the timing of scheduling new patient appointments.
• Documents communication and status of new patient appointments in the EMR.

Requirements

• Associate degree or two years of college with 1 year of work experience in an acute care setting or physician office with similar duties, including extensive use of Electronic Medical Records.
• High School Diploma with a minimum of 3 years of work experience in an acute care setting or physician office with similar duties, including extensive use of Electronic Medical Records.
• Medical Assistant certificate from a CAAHEP-accredited program can substitute up to 12 months of the work experience requirement.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with insurance coverage verification and obtaining insurance authorization for outpatient procedures.
• Experience with coordination and scheduling in-patient and out-patient procedures.
