About the position

The Intake Nurse Navigator position at MD Anderson Cancer Center is designed to provide personalized assistance to patients, families, and caregivers, facilitating informed decision-making and access to quality medical and supportive care services. This role involves coordinating care from the initial referral through the patient's first visit, working closely with physicians and care teams across various specialties to ensure a seamless patient experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop relationships with patients at the first point of contact through their first appointment.
  • Assess patient, family, and caregiver needs upon initial encounter, including barriers to care and distress screening.
  • Provide clinical provisional review to screen and schedule first visits and specialty consultations.
  • Coordinate appointments for consults with support services such as social workers and dieticians.
  • Apply knowledge of payer requirements and insurance processes to establish appropriate referrals.
  • Respond to voicemail and myChart messages within one business day and answer phone calls in a timely manner.
  • Provide education related to oncology diagnosis, treatment, and support services.
  • Set patient expectations on scheduling and treatment plans during the first appointment.
  • Communicate concerns and perform patient follow-up regarding timely coordination of appointments and tests.
  • Utilize Epic flowsheet to develop concise patient summaries and document recommendations according to care guidelines.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities to enhance the patient experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing (required).
  • Master's degree in Nursing (preferred).
  • Five years of professional oncology nursing or oncology nurse navigation experience (required).
  • Three years of professional oncology nursing or oncology nurse navigation experience with a preferred degree.
  • Current State of Texas Professional Nursing License (RN).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in Oncology nursing.
