About the position

The Intake Paralegal at West Tennessee Legal Services, Inc. plays a crucial role in assisting clients with civil legal matters by conducting interviews, assessing legal needs, and determining eligibility for services. This position is part of a centralized intake unit that will expand its services to additional counties, responding to an increased demand for legal assistance. The Intake Paralegal serves as the first point of contact for clients, requiring strong communication skills and a commitment to helping low-income individuals navigate their legal challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Interview and complete application process with applicants.
  • Perform legal needs assessment on applicants.
  • Conduct food stamp/benefits screening.
  • Gather pertinent information about client issues.
  • Maintain accurate and timely case notes in the case management system.
  • Research, as needed.
  • Distribute community education materials.
  • Speak to the public at health fairs, community agencies, etc.
  • Perform general office work, such as filing, answering phone, typing, etc.
  • Maintain contemporaneous timekeeping.
  • Perform other duties as may reasonably be requested.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; and equivalent 6 months to one-year related experience and/or training equivalent to a Paralegal Certificate or Associate's degree; or
  • Paralegal Certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to competently use Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, and Adobe professional.
  • Demonstrated experience working with the public.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, computer, and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle a demanding workload.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, both within WTLS and with community partners.
