About the position

Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida, Inc. (CCLA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing free civil legal services to low-income residents of Broward County. The organization is currently seeking an Intake Paralegal to join its Centralized Intake Unit. This role is crucial in assisting with the completion of prescreens and applications, interviewing applicants and clients, and gathering necessary documentation. The Intake Paralegal will work closely with attorneys and other staff members to ensure that clients receive the legal assistance they need. The Intake Paralegal will be responsible for answering phone calls, returning calls and emails promptly, and following up on referrals from various units and organizations. They will screen applicants through phone, electronic means, and in-person meetings, setting up intake appointments and determining eligibility for services. The position requires maintaining accurate records and case notes in CCLA's case management system, explaining compliance documents to clients, and performing community outreach events. Additionally, the Intake Paralegal will be expected to comply with program and grant requirements, attend mandated trainings, and assist in training other staff members as needed. Responsibilities

  • Answer phone calls and promptly return calls and/or emails.
  • Follow up on referrals from all units, organizations, agencies, and online intake.
  • Screen applicants/clients by phone, electronically, and in-person.
  • Set up intake appointments and meet with applicants.
  • Complete conflict checks, prescreens, and intakes.
  • Determine eligibility for services.
  • Complete intakes in case management system by communicating with applicants via telephone, electronically, or in-person.
  • Maintain records, case notes, and daily time-keeping in CCLA's case management system.
  • Explain intake/compliance documents and have them signed by applicants or clients.
  • Handle case acceptance from and referrals to outside organizations, including other legal aid organizations.
  • Perform community outreach events in-person and virtually, as well as on social media, and conduct educational trainings for staff, clients, and community providers as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with program and grant requirements.
  • Attend mandated trainings and train other staff as needed.
  • Work closely as part of a team with all CCLA units.
  • Complete reports timely.
  • Perform other duties as requested by CCLA Management, Supervisors, or as required by grant(s).

Requirements

  • 1 to 5 years of experience preferred.
  • Applicants with an Associate's degree and/or paralegal certificate are preferred.
  • Relevant work experience will be considered in lieu of educational requirements.
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong written and verbal skills.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Ability to multitask and work efficiently and independently with supervision.
  • Professional demeanor and client-oriented focus.
  • Commitment and passion for working with the low-income community.
  • Must pass a background check before employment begins.
