About the position

The Integrated Fire and Resource Crew Members and Leaders position with American YouthWorks is an opportunity for individuals interested in pursuing a career in wildland firefighting and natural resource management. This role is part of the Texas Conservation Corps (TXCC), which collaborates with the US Forest Service Southern Region to provide extensive training and certifications in wildland firefighting and natural resource management. Crew members will engage in a variety of fire response activities, including prescribed burns, conservation projects, and cyclical maintenance objectives on US Forest Service National Forests and Grasslands in Texas. The program is designed to equip participants with the necessary skills and certifications to succeed in the field of wildland firefighting. Crew members will receive training in First Aid and CPR, as well as specialized training such as S212 Wildland Fire Chainsaw Training and S130 Firefighter Training. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to earn the Arduous Pack Test and Red Card FFT2 certification, which qualifies them for wildland fire jobs after their service. This position not only offers hands-on experience but also the chance to network with various partnering agencies, including the US Forest Service, Texas Forest Service, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and the National Park Service. The term for Crew Leaders runs from November 14, 2022, to April 28, 2023, while Crew Members will serve from November 30, 2022, to April 28, 2023. Responsibilities

  • Guide crews through their day-to-day field activities.
  • Provide guidance to crew members, including reflection, conflict resolution, and technical training.
  • Communicate with partners, contractors, program staff, site supervisors, volunteers, and other members to ensure the execution of a quality program and quality projects.
  • Serve as the program trained driver.

Requirements

  • Interest in wildland firefighting and natural resource management.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and follow instructions.
  • Previous leadership experience for Crew Leaders.

  • Experience in outdoor work or environmental conservation.
  • Knowledge of firefighting techniques and safety protocols.
