About the position

The Interactive Visual Designer at NBC News Digital is responsible for creating compelling visual content that enhances storytelling across various digital platforms. This role requires a blend of design expertise and technical skills to develop graphics and interactive projects that support news reporting. The designer will collaborate with journalists and editors to visualize data and create engaging content that resonates with audiences.

Responsibilities

• Create charts, diagrams and visuals upon request and on deadline
• Collaborate with reporters, editors and other visual journalists around the newsroom to find visual angles to breaking and enterprise new stories across a variety of subjects
• Create smart approaches for visual stories across NBC News Digital
• Grow visual storytelling on the website, app, social media, and other platforms
• Work quickly and efficiently under tight deadlines.

Requirements

• Minimum 3 years of experience working in a newsroom or on news graphics.
• Minimum 3 years of experience designing, developing and implementing solutions in fields that include visual information design, and/or interactive data visualization development.
• Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Demonstrated experience using Git version control.
• Some experience with Figma, Mapbox or Maptiler, ai2html, Leaflet, Illustrator, D3.js and implementing accessible designs.
• Experience building graphics for mobile devices.
• Drawing and illustration skills.

Nice-to-haves

• Python, R, and QGIS experience.
• Flexibility to quickly respond to changing project needs and deadlines in a fast-paced news environment.
• A strong interest in current events and an understanding of the role of digital media in journalism.
• Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, including journalists, developers, and other designers.
• A knack for developing original concepts and staying ahead of design trends to create visually compelling content.
