About the position

The Interdisciplinary Engineer (Civil/Mechanical/Electrical) position at the Department of the Interior involves providing engineering expertise for construction activities related to various facilities and structures. The role focuses on ensuring compliance with project specifications, resolving contractor issues, and coordinating with stakeholders to meet environmental and operational standards. This position is critical in addressing water demands while protecting the environment in the Western United States.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a field engineer providing expertise for construction activities involving earth, concrete, electrical, and mechanical features.
  • Review project plans and specifications prior to contract advertisement to determine practicability from a construction standpoint.
  • Resolve problems with contractors and inform them of requirements concerning plans and specifications, construction scheduling, and safety measures.
  • Investigate the need for contract change orders and recommend changes in specifications, designs, or schedules to meet on-site conditions.
  • Review construction inspection and progress reports, preparing technical data on specific phases or features of construction.
  • Coordinate work and keep engineers, safety engineers, organizations, stakeholders, and officials of local jurisdictions informed on project operations.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship or U.S. National status is required.
  • A bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited institution or a combination of education and experience in engineering.
  • Professional registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in federal service for GS-11 applicants, or GS-11 level for GS-12 applicants.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification as a Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) and Grants Officer's Technical Representative (GOTR) is preferred.
  • Experience in overseeing construction activities for large projects is beneficial.
