About the position

The Interdisciplinary Research General Engineer/Research Physical Scientist position involves managing, supervising, leading, and performing professional research engineering work or work in the research physical sciences. This role is critical in conducting high-quality research that impacts the field and contributes to the mission and goals of the Lab. As a key member of a multidisciplinary team, you will engage in all phases of project evolution, from proposal and planning to execution and completion. Your work will not only advance scientific knowledge but also deliver significant value to sponsors and stakeholders. In this position, you will lead and conduct research, providing technical leadership and consultation in your area of expertise. You will play a vital role in knowledge and technology transfer, preparing reports and manuscripts for broad dissemination. Your responsibilities will include conceiving, formulating, planning, and conducting research focused on experimental investigations of complex fossil energy-related issues. You will also evaluate proposals, establish long-range plans, and address controversial issues, ensuring that the research team overcomes difficulties and obstacles. The role requires a proactive approach to leading research teams, resulting in important changes to existing products, methods, techniques, processes, or practices. You will be expected to conform or modify scientific theories or methodologies based on your findings and insights. This position is not only about conducting research but also about shaping the future of energy technologies through innovative solutions and impactful contributions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform high quality research
  • Conduct high-level, impactful research through all phases of project evolution (propose, plan, execute and completion)
  • Serve as a principal investigator or part of a multidisciplinary team that delivers impact and value to sponsors
  • Lead and conduct research as part of multi-disciplinary research teams providing technical leadership and consultation
  • Prepare reports and manuscripts for broad dissemination
  • Conceive, formulate, plan, and conduct research focused on experimental investigation of fossil energy related issues
  • Evaluate proposals and establish long-range plans
  • Investigate difficulties, failures, and obstacles
  • Lead research teams that result in important changes in existing products, methods, techniques, processes, or practices
  • Conform or modify scientific theories or methodologies

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field accredited by ABET
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-12 in the Federal service
  • Experience in conducting impactful research throughout all phases of project
  • Experience serving as a member of a multi-disciplinary research team
  • Experience conducting field research on fossil energy related issues
  • Experience assisting in research that supports innovation and solutions to energy challenges
