About the position

The Interdisciplinary Supervisory General Engineer/Supervisory Physical Scientist position at the Department of Health and Human Services focuses on leading national and international efforts to prevent work-related illnesses, injuries, and fatalities among mine workers. The role involves conducting research, developing new technologies, and managing programs aimed at enhancing mine safety and health. The position requires oversight of various activities related to human capital, budget management, and policy-setting within the Division.

Responsibilities

  • Provide national and international leadership for the prevention of work-related illness, injury, and fatalities of mine workers through research and prevention activities.
  • Perform research, development, and testing of new technologies, equipment, and practices to enhance mine safety and health.
  • Conduct experiments through laboratory and field investigations to prevent catastrophic events and understand cause and effect relationships.
  • Utilize monitoring and advanced numerical modeling techniques to understand and visualize ground behavior, improving mine layout design criteria.
  • Identify and evaluate emerging health and safety issues as mining operations move into more challenging conditions.
  • Develop and promote health solutions to maximize worker protection, minimize exposures, and prevent disease.

Requirements

  • US Citizenship is required.
  • Males born after December 31, 1959 must be registered or exempt from Selective Service.
  • Must have a degree in engineering or physical science with specific coursework.
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 grade level, managing teams of researchers and providing technical oversight.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities relevant to the supervisory requirements of this position.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in interdisciplinary positions related to engineering or physical sciences.
  • Professional registration or licensure as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Experience in managing budgets and procurement processes.
