About the position

The Interim Controller position is a critical role based in Fort Worth, Texas, requiring a commitment of three months through the end of October. This position is fully in-office and involves overseeing the financial operations of the company during a transitional period. The Interim Controller will be responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance with GAAP, and the effective management of the accounting department. This role will also involve leading the transition from MRI software to Yardi, which is essential for optimizing the accounting systems and ensuring a seamless integration of financial processes. Key responsibilities include preparing and reviewing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, managing the accounts payable and receivable processes, and overseeing cash management and general ledger activities. The Interim Controller will conduct budgeting and forecasting, perform revenue and expenditure variance analysis, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. Additionally, the role requires collaboration with treasury on cash management and participation in audits and compliance activities. The Interim Controller will also play a vital role in team leadership and development, providing guidance and mentorship to accounting team members. This includes managing the operations of the accounting department, analyzing deliverables to ensure they meet client expectations, and fostering a collaborative work environment. Strategic planning and implementation are also key components of this role, as the Interim Controller will work with ownership and management to develop initiatives that enhance operational efficiency and financial performance.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and company policies.
  • Manage the monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing process.
  • Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable functions.
  • Handle cash receipts and cash management activities.
  • Maintain the general ledger and ensure accuracy.
  • Conduct budgeting and forecasting processes.
  • Perform revenue and expenditure variance analysis.
  • Lead the transition from MRI software to Yardi, ensuring seamless integration and optimization of accounting systems.
  • Record fixed asset transactions including acquisitions, capitalization, dispositions, transfers, and depreciation.
  • Reconcile mortgage and reserve balances.
  • Analyze financial data to identify trends and opportunities for optimization.
  • Manage the monthly monitoring of the annual budget and forecasts.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and other regulatory requirements, working closely with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with treasury on cash management, calculating cash needs at various intervals.
  • Manage bank account administration.
  • Lead and participate in audits and compliance-related activities.
  • Coordinate entity tax return(s) with third-party CPA firm.
  • Prepare and coordinate year-end 1099s.
  • Manage and oversee the operations of the accounting department once established.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to accounting team members, fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment.
  • Analyze deliverables of self and team to confirm they meet client expectations.
  • Collaborate with ownership, management, and key stakeholders to develop and implement strategic initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and financial performance.
  • Evaluate, implement, and streamline policies, procedures, controls, and methodologies.

Requirements

  • 7-10 years of experience in a Controller position.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • CPA certification required.
  • Proficiency in Yardi and MRI software.
  • Proven leadership and employee management experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior experience in a startup environment preferred.
