About the position

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) serves as a key member of the executive management team of the hospital. This role is responsible for multiple departments assigned by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and provides leadership and direction to department heads and staff. The COO is tasked with the development and accomplishments of the strategic direction and operational objectives of the responsible areas and other key service lines assigned. The COO provides administrative direction for the operation of assigned departments and appraises the performance of the respective department heads, including the authority to hire and fire, subject to the veto of the CEO. The COO communicates routinely with the CEO concerning policy recommendations and suggested courses of action pertinent to the efficient operation of assigned departments. Additionally, the COO implements new policies, disseminates pertinent information following administrative directives, and recommends improvements to hospital facilities in assigned areas, including construction or renovation of structures and purchase of new equipment. The COO promotes complete involvement of department heads in the preparation of budgets and educates them on the importance of budgeting, forecasting, and planning processes. Furthermore, the COO advises and makes recommendations to the CEO concerning budget, cost, and financial matters, encouraging department heads to establish performance measures, increase productivity, improve quality, control costs, and maximize facility utilization. The COO also advises the CEO where executive action is necessary to accomplish these goals and plans the activities of individual departments in relation to other hospital departments to foster a better understanding of each other's problems. The COO attends medical staff meetings and/or medical staff committee meetings as assigned or requested, informing the CEO of proceedings and recommending action as necessary. Additionally, the COO represents the hospital by membership in related professional associations. Job duties and responsibilities could change based on the candidate's strengths.
