About the position

The OSE Director of High School & Upper Schools reports to the Executive Director of Special Education and is responsible for the oversight of all programs and services for Cambridge students with disabilities placed at the high school and upper schools in Cambridge. The Director serves as an advocate, resource and communication liaison among teachers, administrators, parents and community agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise special education teachers, support and related services staff in specified schools (i.e. CRLS, HSEP, PAUS, VLUS, RAUS, CSUS).
  • Perform personnel functions (e.g. recruitment, hiring, evaluations, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing, enhancing productivity of personnel and ensuring that objectives of Special Education programs are achieved.
  • Manage all special education programs and services at the upper schools and high school.
  • Collaborate with district administrators to develop, evaluate and implement appropriate programs and services for secondary (6th grade - Post Grad) students with disabilities.
  • Collaborate with school teams to ensure that appropriate data supports the recommendation for more restrictive educational placements.
  • Act as a liaison for community agencies serving students with disabilities regarding post school activities and outcomes.
  • Ensures best practices related to inclusive education.
  • Ensures families are well-informed regarding school and service options for students with disabilities.
  • Provide administrative support to principals, assistant principals, psychologists and counselors regarding the implementation of special education services and programs.
  • Work collaboratively with parents, community, colleagues and school staff.
  • In collaboration with the Principal, Upper Heads, and teachers, develop schedules for students with disabilities.
  • Actively contribute to program improvement initiatives as appropriate.
  • Oversees and manages the work of reporting staff.
  • Develops and maintains partnerships with community organizations serving students with disabilities.
  • Assist the Executive Director with special projects as requested.
  • Assume other responsibilities, as may be assigned or apparent, pursuant to department goals.

Requirements

  • Broad knowledge and experience of students with various types of disabilities and Universal Design for Learning.
  • Above average skills in teaching students with learning, social-emotional, and behavior disabilities.
  • Excellent skills in program development and organizational leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability in transition planning.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability with teaching and servicing students in middle and upper grades.
  • Demonstrated ability designing programs and services.
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • General knowledge of curriculum, interventions and educational/special education technology.
  • Requires travel in and around Massachusetts and surrounding states.

Benefits

  • 40 hours per week, 11 months per year.
