About the position

The Interior Designer I position at Baltimore City Public Schools is responsible for the design, alteration, and furnishing of interior spaces to meet the functional and aesthetic requirements of construction and renovation projects. This role involves collaboration with project teams to ensure that designs align with the needs of the schools and district, while also maintaining compliance with relevant standards and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Review designs, plans, and support the specification of interior design elements in cooperation with project teams.
  • Develop and maintain standards, criteria, specifications, and prototypes for interior layouts, finishes, furnishings, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Prepare technical drawings, renderings, and related documents to convey interior space design concepts and specifications.
  • Coordinate and integrate mechanical, electrical, and structural engineering disciplines into interior design proposals.
  • Develop, recommend, and execute procurement strategies and installation requirements for furniture, furnishings, and equipment.
  • Evaluate cost estimates, bid proposals, design submissions, construction documents, materials, and vendor performance.
  • Develop, organize, and coordinate temporary occupancy provisions during construction and renovation.
  • Oversee and coordinate internal District-wide review of design submissions from contracted firms and suppliers.
  • Provide on-site coordination and inspection of installations, deliveries, and construction, recommending actions as necessary.
  • Conduct pre- and post-occupancy evaluations to assess executed design concepts.
  • Develop, maintain, and issue complete and accurate reports and other documents as required.
  • Prepare documents recommending payment of direct payment orders against approved invoices.
  • Work closely with the Senior Project Manager for Interior Design and Director of Design in all aspects of design planning and execution.
  • Perform and promote all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in interior design or a related discipline from an accredited college or institution.
  • Three years of related experience in commercial interior design.
  • Ability to identify, research, and apply creative solutions to design projects.
  • Proficient in the knowledge and use of computer software, including AutoCAD, Sketch-Up, Microsoft Project, Adobe Creative, and similar design software.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of FF&E standards and large-scale procurement strategies.
  • Knowledge of government contracting and procurement procedures and requirements.
  • Knowledge of design, materials, fabrication, and manufacturing specifications for educational/commercial/industrial use.
  • Familiarity with ADA guidelines and applicable building codes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
