About the position

The Interior Designer at the University of Southern Indiana is responsible for creating high-quality, functional, and aesthetically pleasing interior spaces that meet the needs of the university. This role involves collaboration with various stakeholders, including the Director of Facilities, consultants, and students, to manage multiple interior design projects from inception to completion. The designer will utilize CAD software to update and create drawings, ensuring compliance with building codes and ADA requirements while enhancing the overall functionality and safety of the spaces.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate objectives of renovation and refurnishing projects with end users and Facilities team.
  • Research furniture and finish options, colors, styles, brands, and textures to create design proposals.
  • Enhance the function, safety, and aesthetics of interior spaces.
  • Provide specifications, drawings, and bid documents to Procurement for solicitation of bids.
  • Assist in planning and design for renovation, rehabilitation, and new construction projects.
  • Perform design, construction, and maintenance drafting by hand and computer.
  • Maintain understanding of current design trends, products, construction systems, building codes, and ADA requirements.
  • Coordinate the soliciting and contracting of fabrication, installation, and arrangement of interior items.
  • Present proposals for approval, draft plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Coordinate and supervise the work of contractors and University staff.
  • Maintain updated records of all projects and structures, including cost records and specifications.
  • Work with consultants to design and prepare interior and exterior signage.
  • Build rapport with University students, employees, consultants, and suppliers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in interior design or related field with one year of commercial interior design project management experience, or an Associate degree with three years' experience.
  • Knowledge of building codes, ADA regulations, and other pertinent regulations.
  • Considerable knowledge of modern principles and practices of furnishings, interior design, and space planning.
  • Experience in architectural drafting, including AutoCAD.
  • Proficiency in using computers, including word processing, spreadsheet, and email software.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency in design software such as Revit, SketchUp, Adobe software, InDesign, and Photoshop.
