About the position

WSP is currently seeking an Interior Designer to join our Federal Programs Team, with opportunities to work from our Washington, DC or San Diego, CA offices. This role involves engaging in various stages of project design, collaborating closely with clients, contractors, and internal teams to ensure that project objectives are met effectively. As part of a growing organization, you will play a crucial role in addressing client challenges and delivering innovative design solutions. In this position, you will assist in managing projects by developing project scopes, schedules, and overseeing job production, quality, and fee management. You will lead the programming and conceptualization phases, integrating strategic design solutions tailored to assigned projects. Your responsibilities will also include consulting with manufacturers, researching materials, and documenting architectural drawings. You will be involved in construction administration, responding to Requests for Information (RFIs), preparing sketches and addendums, and visiting construction sites to gather information and prepare punch lists. As an Interior Designer, you will oversee the design work of others, ensuring that all design elements are cohesive and integrated. You will mentor junior staff, participate in performance coaching, and gather customer design requirements prior to contract requests. Your role will encompass creating design and construction documents, preparing project specifications, and generating presentation graphics. You will also be responsible for collecting and reporting programmatic information and project status updates. Coordination with architecture, engineering, safety, security, and construction teams will be essential to ensure compliance with Building Codes and ADA requirements. You will assist with design reviews of government projects and develop high-level cost estimates for construction based on historical data. Your project management skills will be critical in preparing and monitoring project schedules and budgets, providing technical guidance, and ensuring that project objectives are achieved efficiently and cost-effectively. You will also be expected to exercise responsible decision-making regarding company resources and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design efforts for all stages of a project, including leadership with the client, contractors, and internal team.
  • Assist in management of projects through developing project scope, schedules, job production, quality, and fee management.
  • Lead programming, conceptualization, development and integration of strategic design solutions for assigned projects.
  • Consult with manufacturers, research and evaluate materials.
  • Document architectural drawings.
  • Assist in construction administration including responding to RFI's, preparing sketches and addendums (CCD's), and visiting the construction site to gather information and/or prepare a punch list.
  • Oversee the design work of others to ensure integrated and cohesive design, supervise preparation of drawings for assigned project phases, and ensure guidelines, quality control, standards and details.
  • Support all phases of the design process including programming and developing workplace standards.
  • Mentor junior staff and participate in performance coaching.
  • Gather and define customer's design requirements and prepare solutions ranging from conceptual design to final design within established parameters.
  • Create design and construction documents, prepare project specifications, develop record control documents, and generate presentation graphics.
  • Collect, prepare, and report programmatic information and official weekly project status reports.
  • Coordinate design activities with architecture, engineering, safety, security, construction, and other related functional areas.
  • Ensure compliance with Building Codes and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.
  • Assist with design reviews of Government projects.
  • Develop high-level cost for construction utilizing historical and research data.
  • Prepare reports and cost and schedule estimates.
  • Manage project design and/or construction efforts, to include schedule, funding, and day-to-day project oversight.
  • Evaluate, validate, and manage project change requests.
  • Prepare and distribute project communication with customers, management, integrated project teams, and stakeholders.
  • Prepare and monitor project schedules and budgets; provide technical guidance and assistance on contracting and construction-related issues; direct design efforts; recommend construction documents for approval; and provide oversight of any follow-on maintenance programs.
  • Optimize performance, cost, and schedule by ensuring project objectives are achieved on schedule and at the lowest cost compatible with user requirements.
  • Ensure integration of all systems, including information technology, telephone, security, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture or Interior Design.
  • 5+ years of experience in architecture or interior design, including a minimum of 5 years experience working on DoD projects.
  • LEED AP preferred. Architectural or Interior Design registration required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop, 3D program (V-Ray), Illustrator and InDesign programs.
  • Technical competence and proven experience in schematic design through construction documents.
  • The ability to contribute and participate in an interdisciplinary team environment.
  • Due to client requirements, ability to obtain a Secret level US Security clearance is required.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
