About the position

SJS Executives, LLC (SJS), also known as SJS Industrial, is seeking a talented Interior Designer to support ongoing construction operations within a local VA healthcare facility. As a Service-Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) with a workforce of 150 employees across the country and a headquarters in Virginia Beach, Virginia, SJS specializes in providing professional services to federal and military organizations. The salary range for this position is between $56,000 and $63,000, and the company offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes 11 paid federal holidays, 80 hours of PTO accrual, as well as medical, dental, and vision insurance, among other benefits. The Interior Designer will play a crucial role in ensuring that the design and construction of healthcare facilities meet the necessary standards and regulations. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of building codes and Joint Commission requirements for healthcare facilities, as well as the ability to work effectively with permitting agencies. The designer will manage third-party architectural and engineering contracts, assist in the preparation of contract documents, and provide life safety and fire protection engineering reviews of design documents. Additionally, the designer will be responsible for tracking findings and recommendations, managing design projects, and coordinating communications among various stakeholders, including the design team, construction team, and VA staff. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in commercial and healthcare interior design, with a minimum of three years of experience in construction or facility-based interior design. A graduate of a four-year college degree program in interior design or a related field is preferred, although relevant design experience may substitute for formal education. The candidate must possess excellent communication skills, knowledge of safety practices in the construction industry, and familiarity with federal and local government building projects. Furthermore, the candidate must be able to pass a drug test and a thorough background check for access to military installations, which will extend beyond seven years in accordance with federal law and US Department of Justice guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of building code and Joint Commission requirements for healthcare facilities and work with permitting agencies.
  • Manage third-party architectural and engineering contracts entered by VA and meet with design professionals.
  • Assist in the preparation of contract documents, including review of drawings and specifications.
  • Provide life safety and fire protection engineering reviews of design documents prior to solicitation, typically using a VA-contracted 3rd party fire protection engineer.
  • Provide report of findings and summary of recommendations.
  • Track findings and recommendations to confirm appropriate corrections were made.
  • Manage design projects, including conducting team meetings, pulling as-built files, completing design reviews, field verification, and coordinating user requirements.
  • Coordinate and document communications with and among design team, construction team, VA staff, and other stakeholders.
  • Perform constructability and technical review of design documents.
  • Solicit design review comments from medical center stakeholders, including the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Consolidate comments into a trackable format for the AE, perform back-check on AE responses to comments.
  • Provide recommendations on construction feasibility, availability of materials and labor, time requirements for installation and construction, and factors related to cost.
  • Coordinate design reviews with the multi-disciplinary construction team and obtain signoffs from team members at project milestones as required by local engineering policy.
  • Work with interior design and medical equipment planner to incorporate furniture and equipment requirements into design and maintain alignment of procurement timelines.

Requirements

  • Must have experience in Commercial design and/or Health interior design.
  • Must have experience with office furniture space planning.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of interior design experience in construction or facility-based interior design.
  • Graduate of a four-year college degree program in interior design or related field. If applicants lack a college curriculum, they may substitute the education requirement with additional relevant design experience.
  • Ability to interpret/coordinate Architectural/Engineering plans and specifications.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of safety practices in the construction industry, including specifically, a background that indicates familiarity with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety requirements on construction projects.
  • Possess in-depth knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, such as OSHA, EPA, and local health and safety laws.
  • Ability to accurately calculate construction costs for changes, price the value of needed work, and negotiate equitable adjustments.
  • Ability to inspect materials, workmanship, and construction and installation of various systems in the Architect's or Engineer's area of expertise.
  • Experience and familiarity with Federal and local government building projects, and with procedural, review, and approval requirements.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a drug test and a thorough background check for access onto a military installation.
