About the position

The Interior Designer at Wayne State University is responsible for creating unique design solutions for the university's buildings and facilities. This role involves providing both creative and technical expertise, managing a diverse project load, and consulting with various stakeholders to ensure successful project completion. The designer will work on both large and small-scale projects, focusing on interior design, planning, documentation, and coordination of new construction and renovation projects.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in architectural interior design, planning, documentation, and coordination of new construction, renovation, remodeling, and alteration projects of University buildings and facilities.
  • Provide consultation and technical expertise to University personnel, outside vendors, and contractors regarding furniture space planning and procurement.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate interior material and color palettes for buildings and spaces throughout the university.
  • Prepare color and material boards for presentation to clients and associated stakeholders.
  • Prepare and determine specifications for furniture purchases and solicit competitive bids and price quotations.
  • Assist in the preparation of feasibility studies, schematic and preliminary drawings, and cost estimates for proposed projects.
  • Participate in drafting and code research activities.
  • Assist in monitoring compliance of construction contracts with WSU standards for interior materials and colors.
  • Interface with and serve as a resource person to University departments and outside professionals.
  • Attend professional seminars and symposiums to keep abreast of interior design related business and construction administration procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Interior Design or related field.
  • 3 to 4 years of job-related experience in interior design or a related field.
  • Proficiency in Autocad, Revit, Sketchup, and Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
  • Strong creativity, artistic ability, and imagination.
  • Knowledge of furniture space planning and preparation of related specifications.
  • Ability to read blueprints and knowledge of building codes relating to interior finishes and furnishings.
  • Ability to perform realistic space planning and visualize plans in three dimensions.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to coordinate with multiple teams.

Nice-to-haves

  • Counsel for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) accredited program highly preferred.
  • National Counsel for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) Certification.
  • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Accreditation.
