About the position

The employee performs ongoing patient care duties in the Emergency Department. Duties include providing assessment and management of ambulatory patients seen in the Emergency Department. The incumbent will evaluate patients for emergency medical conditions, order appropriate diagnostic studies and perform a wide range of treatment procedures under the direction of the supervising physician.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in behavioral/psychiatric situations including crisis intervention and management of aggressive or suicidal psychiatric patients.
  • Assist Emergency Department Physicians with complex, specialized, and potentially life-threatening procedures such as defibrillation, cardioversions, insertion of chest drainage tubes, or initiation of mechanical ventilation.
  • Independently recognize life-threatening situations and act to correct these according to established national or facility protocols.
  • Perform airway management using BIPAP and advanced airway techniques including the use of LMA and oral intubations.
  • Operate specialized medical equipment such as defibrillators, electrocardiographs, and oxygen apparatus.
  • Assess patient status and keep physician informed of any change or need for additional treatment.
  • Perform dressing changes, wound management, suture removal, repair of simple lacerations, Foley catheters insertion, splint, binder and bandage applications, and performance of tracheotomy care.
  • Collect, prepare, and transfer specimens to the lab for processing of blood, tissue, urine, stool, and sputum.
  • Monitor and obtain test results and inform physicians promptly to facilitate patient care.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must have experience as a paramedic.
  • Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-6.
  • Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience; one full year of graduate education is required.
  • Time-In-Grade Requirement: Must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06 level if a current Federal employee.
