About The Position

The Intern & Volunteer Coordinator at Duke University is responsible for engaging students interested in research, animal care, education, communications, and conservation with the Duke Lemur Center's (DLC) programs. This role ensures compliance with university policies and oversees training and documentation to maintain a safe environment for all participants.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 2 years managing volunteer programs (in a zoological setting, preferred).
  • Familiarity with the zoological profession is preferred.
  • Job duties require advanced knowledge of a specialized field.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent ability to work well as part of a diverse team and independently.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to adapt to diverse work situations and to adjust to shifting priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with all department heads to ensure that all student research/volunteer/intern activities are commensurate with university and DLC policies.
  • Coordinate a progressive internship program that engages college-aged students (local, national and international) with the various missions of the DLC.
  • Develop and maintain a record keeping system that insures 100% compliance with all of Duke's regulations and monitoring for student researchers, volunteers and interns.
  • Develop and implement a volunteer orientation, training program and documentation system that insures a safe work environment and compliance with all university and DLC protocols.
  • Coordinate volunteer/intern events including, but not limited to, DLC's annual volunteer appreciation event and the Summer Intern Project Symposium.
  • Organize and supervise student and corporate group volunteer activities.
  • Maintain DLC's Volgistics database to reflect all current researchers, volunteer, interns and student experiences.
  • Work with Duke transportation and DLC Director to ensure free transportation for all students when needed.
  • Develop strategies that increase diversity in student and volunteer participation.
  • Maintain excellent communications with DLC volunteer team (newsletter, emails, verbal, etc.).
  • Oversee and insure the timeliness of all phases (marketing, application, interview, selection and completion) of the DLC's intern program.
  • Assess and modify programs to continually enhance the student experience.
