The City of Reno Arts and Culture Department is offering a GIS Internship designed for current or former students who have a demonstrated interest in fields such as geography, urban spatial analytics, historic preservation, or public history. This part-time internship provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in geospatial data management and the use of Esri ArcGIS products. Interns will be responsible for creating maps, StoryMaps, and databases that convey information about previously surveyed historic properties and areas to the public. This role is crucial in helping to preserve and promote the rich history of Reno through effective data representation. Interns will work closely with city staff to assist in the creation and editing of spatial data related to historic resources within Reno. The internship aims to transfer information from current historic resources survey projects, such as those in Downtown Reno and East 4th Street, into geospatial formats. This includes creating maps that display information about all historic resources that have been previously surveyed, as well as developing a method to identify areas in Reno that require updated survey information. Interns will also recommend priority areas for survey based on various factors, including the average age of buildings and existing development pressures. The internship will require attention to detail and strong organizational skills, as interns will be handling data management tasks that are essential for the integrity of the geospatial information being produced. The role may involve working in both indoor and outdoor environments, and interns should be prepared for physical demands such as handling objects up to 50 pounds for short distances. Additionally, there may be a need to work on evenings or weekends, depending on project requirements.
