About the position

The Intern Athletic Trainer position at the University of Georgia involves coordinating athletic training services for student-athletes participating in Olympic sports. This role operates under the medical direction of the head team physician and collaborates with various healthcare providers and UGAAA staff. The internship is a 12-month appointment starting on July 1, 2025, and ending on June 30, 2026, focusing on the recognition, evaluation, management, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries, as well as injury prevention and athlete education.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as athletic trainer for specified teams, including practice and competition coverage and travel responsibilities.
  • Coordinate and supervise medical care for athletes as assigned by the director of sports medicine.
  • Conduct initial assessment and treatment of athletic injuries.
  • Refer athletes to physicians as appropriate and maintain regular communication with the primary care team physician.
  • Perform casting and splinting as needed.
  • Provide wound care, including removal of sutures and staples on MD order.
  • Schedule and coordinate diagnostic testing appointments and physician appointments.
  • Utilize therapeutic modalities and exercise for treatment.
  • Maintain confidential medical records in the Presagia system.
  • Collect and apply Fusionetics data for performance assessment.
  • Coordinate concussion testing protocol and collaborate for athletic event medical coverage.
  • Develop and implement structured rehabilitation programs under MD supervision, including coordinating physician re-checks and participating in weekly rehabilitation progress updates.
  • Develop rehabilitation protocols in coordination with the rehabilitation director.
  • Conduct isokinetic testing and aquatic rehabilitation as part of injury recovery.
  • Assist in planning, scheduling, and coordinating pre-participation physical examinations for student-athletes, including follow-up testing.
  • Implement preventative maintenance rehabilitation programs and conduct fitness assessments for athletes.
  • Fit protective equipment and fabricate tape, braces, and special pads as needed.
  • Provide emergency care and first aid, develop emergency plans, and manage emergency equipment.
  • Educate athletes on injury prevention, fitness, and nutritional counseling, and refer to specialists as appropriate.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in a Master's or Bachelor's program in Athletic Training or a related field.
  • Knowledge of athletic training principles and practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with athletes, coaches, and medical staff.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification from the Board of Certification (BOC) for Athletic Trainers.
  • Experience working with collegiate or professional athletes.
  • Knowledge of sports nutrition and strength conditioning.
