About the position

The position involves performing custodian, grounds, and minor maintenance duties or Van Driver I duties while training. The individual must obtain a license within six months of the hire date. Under the general supervision of the MOTG Supervisor, the role includes providing new and renewal school bus driver instruction per current California Department of Education standards, driving a school bus over designated routes for transporting students, and maintaining records and reports as assigned by the supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Provide school bus driver instruction to approved applicants and renewal instruction to current district and non-district school bus drivers.
  • Provide safety instruction to District School Bus Drivers for student emergency drills and safe ridership.
  • Maintain Driver training files per Department of Education and California Highway Patrol (Title 13) requirements.
  • Drive a school bus daily, or as assigned, over designated routes in accordance with time schedules.
  • Pick up and discharge children at designated stops, escorting students across streets when necessary, stopping traffic as needed.
  • Transport students, teachers, and chaperones on field trips to various locations following departure and arrival time as scheduled.
  • Assist in maintaining the school bus and other motor equipment in a clean and safe operating condition.
  • Maintain good order among students on the bus following District policies regarding the disciplining of children.
  • Make routine safety checks.
  • May be required to (re) fuel the school bus or other District owned vehicles.
  • Perform vehicle pre-trip inspections as described by law.
  • Attend scheduled safety meetings and safety programs.
  • Maintain records and reports as assigned.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of safe driving practices, state laws, rules and regulations pertaining to school bus operations and pupil transportation.
  • Ability to drive a school bus safely and efficiently.
  • Ability to learn designated bus route(s), including stops and traffic hazards.
  • Ability to maintain simple records and logs as required by District procedure and State law.
  • Ability to work independently or in a group setting without direct supervision.
  • Ability to interact with students, staff, and public in a professional, cooperative, and courteous manner.
  • Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment in stressful and emergency situations.
  • Possess good personal and telephone communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Valid California Driver's License.
  • Valid School Bus Drivers Certificate and current medical certificate.
  • Valid Dept. Of Education State Certified School Bus Driver Instructor Certificate or ability to obtain one.
  • Valid First-aid/CPR Certificate.
