About the position

At HNTB, we are looking for an Intern Structural Engineer who will play a crucial role in the design and analysis of various structural elements and systems. This position is an excellent opportunity for a motivated intern to apply their technical knowledge, develop practical skills, and contribute to the success of complex construction projects. You will work closely with experienced design engineers and assist assigned department(s) and/or project(s) by performing basic engineering-related tasks that reflect elements of standard post-secondary engineering curriculum. As an intern, you will assist in the design and analysis of structural elements and systems, including buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure projects. You will collaborate with senior engineers to evaluate project requirements, constraints, and design criteria. Utilizing structural analysis software such as SAP2000, ETABS, or similar tools, you will perform structural calculations and verify design integrity. Additionally, you will support the preparation of design drawings, specifications, and construction documents, and conduct site visits and surveys to gather data, assess existing conditions, and evaluate design alternatives. Your role will also involve assisting in the development of design reports and technical documentation, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and staying updated on industry codes, regulations, and best practices related to structural design. You will contribute to quality control processes, including reviewing design calculations, plans, and specifications, and participate in design review meetings to provide support to project teams as needed. This position is based out of our Boston and Chelmsford Offices, and please note that relocation and housing are not provided for these positions.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design and analysis of structural elements and systems, including buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure projects.

  • Utilize structural analysis software such as SAP2000, ETABS, or similar tools to perform structural calculations and verify design integrity.

  • Conduct site visits and surveys to gather data, assess existing conditions, and evaluate design alternatives.
  • Assist in the development of design reports and technical documentation.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including architects, mechanical engineers, and construction professionals, to ensure seamless integration of structural design elements.
  • Stay updated on industry codes, regulations, and best practices related to structural design.
  • Contribute to quality control processes, including reviewing design calculations, plans, and specifications.
  • Participate in design review meetings and provide support to project teams as needed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent plus current enrollment in an accredited post-secondary engineering program.
  • Understands engineering, geometric, and algebraic principles at a basic level.
  • Shows proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Accepts and applies direction from peers and supervisors.
  • Obtains an understanding of introductory shop drawing and submittal procedures and requirements.
  • Ability to perform basic engineering calculations.
  • Ability to organize information for use in drawings or other documents.

Nice-to-haves

  • Completion of 2 years of post-secondary Civil engineering program
  • AutoCAD and/or MicroStation experience
  • Strong interest in transportation and infrastructure
