About the position

As a Mechanical Engineer Intern/Co-op at Bechtel Plant Machinery, Inc. (BPMI), you will engage in a variety of technical functions that support the company's operations. This role is designed for students pursuing a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, providing an opportunity to apply academic knowledge in a practical setting. You will work under significant oversight, performing tasks that include engineering evaluations and analyses, planning, designing, modeling, analyzing, documenting, and testing of nuclear, mechanical, structural, or electrical components, systems, and equipment. Your work may also involve operations support, safety analysis, vibration analysis, and the development of engineering methods and software. The internship will commence in Summer 2025, requiring a full-time commitment of 40 hours per week. It is important to note that this is not a remote position; you will be expected to work on-site in Schenectady, New York. This internship is structured to enhance your academic training while allowing you to gain critical business skills and insights into BPMI, the Navy, and the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. In this role, you will assist with engineering responsibilities that support various activities including fleet operations, technology analysis, manufacturing, and testing. You will prepare project plans, conduct analytical evaluations, and develop an understanding of component and system interrelationships. Additionally, you will assist in the preparation of technical manuals and reports, participate in technical discussions with suppliers, and monitor supplier performance. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a supportive and dynamic environment, contributing to the mission of the United States Navy.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with engineering responsibility that supports fleet, field, technology, analysis, manufacturing, facilities, testing, and operations activities.
  • Assist in the study, design, application, analysis, test or the preparation of specifications and processes for systems, materials, equipment, or components relating to a limited aspect of the group's function.
  • Prepare project plans to accomplish assigned work. Identify and complete performance measures, including post job assessments. Meet project and schedule requirements.
  • Assist in performing analytical evaluations which may include the application of existing computer models.
  • Develop an understanding of component and system interrelationships.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical manuals, reports, or procedures in accordance with NR program quality standards.
  • Assist in design, development, execution, and evaluation of engineering research and design projects.
  • Complete training and work assignments that are planned to provide experience and familiarize with the engineering methods and practices of the Company.
  • Participate in technical discussions with suppliers and evaluate vendor prepared designs and supporting documents.
  • Prepare letters to the Government providing technical information, recommending approval of technical actions or obtaining approval of funding.
  • Assist with monitoring supplier performance and participate in production and quality surveillance and production reviews at supplier plants and report results.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in a Mechanical Engineering (BSME) undergraduate degree program from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of four full semesters completed prior to your internship (60 credits).
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Requires a security clearance; however, all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy security clearance is required.
