About The Position
The Construction Operations Intern position at Michigan Paving and Materials offers a unique opportunity for individuals pursuing a career in the construction industry, particularly in road construction. Interns will gain hands-on experience through a combination of fieldwork and office tasks, working closely with various teams including safety, quality control, project managers, superintendents, and road crews. This internship is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the construction process, from project management to asphalt plant operations, and will prepare interns for future roles in the industry. Interns will rotate through several key experiences that focus on different aspects of construction activities. They will learn about project management, including sourcing, bidding, and the overall build process for construction projects. This includes working with estimators during the bidding process and assisting in setting up contracts and subcontracts. Additionally, interns will spend time with asphalt plant operators, gaining insights into the operations of asphalt plants, including working with yard crews and assisting with general maintenance tasks. The internship also includes opportunities to work directly with construction crews, where interns will learn how to prepare for jobs and set up construction sites under the guidance of foremen. They will gain knowledge about various construction equipment and the skills required to operate them. Furthermore, interns will collaborate with operations managers and finance teams to understand job costs, workload scaling, and the basics of profit and loss statements. Interns will also have the chance to work at aggregate manufacturing locations, learning about basic operations and logistics, as well as the various materials available in quarries and pits. This multifaceted approach ensures that interns receive a well-rounded experience that equips them with the necessary skills and knowledge for a successful career in construction management.
