About the position

The Intern in Emergency Management will work under the supervision of the Emergency Management Administrator to gain practical experience in emergency management. This role involves participating in preparedness activities, training, and real-world or simulated emergencies, contributing to the city's overall readiness and culture of preparedness.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the creation, maintenance, and implementation of emergency management plans.
• Staff the City Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during real-world emergency activations.
• Experience and support Incident Command (IC) for large-scale and planned events.
• Provide hands-on logistical and resource support to various emergency response teams during EOC activations and times of normalcy.
• Develop and facilitate emergency management drills, exercises, and preparedness programs.
• Assist in the maintenance of the City's incident management and monitoring tools.
• Provide recommendations towards the City's overall readiness and culture of preparedness.
• Research potential programs, policies, and tools to augment the City's emergency management capabilities.
• Prepare and maintain records for various emergency management functions and projects.
• Complete trainings and perform other duties as assigned by the Emergency Management Administrator or Administrative Director.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Current enrollment in a graduate or undergraduate degree program with an interest in public safety.
• Declared major/minor within Emergency Management, Homeland Security, Public Administration, Crisis Management, or a closely related field.
• Must be able to work various hours including evenings, weekends, and overnight operations.
• Valid driver license; must obtain Florida driver license within thirty (30) days of employment.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Knowledge of emergency management concepts and terminology.
