Part-time - Intern
Executive, Legislative, and Other General Government Support

About the position

The Intern Engineering Support position at TxDOT's Houston District offers part-time, year-round internships for undergraduate engineering students. This role provides hands-on experience in various aspects of transportation engineering, including roadway and bridge design, construction inspection, materials testing, and traffic systems operations. Interns will work under supervision, following specific instructions while gaining valuable insights into engineering practices and methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in transportation engineering support work such as construction or maintenance inspection.
  • Compile information from microfilm records and other archival materials.
  • Develop spreadsheets, databases, and other electronic documents.
  • Gather basic data and assist with routine statistical analysis.
  • Inspect construction methods and workmanship to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Inspect materials, equipment, and production procedures in a manufacturing plant and conduct laboratory tests.
  • Inspect routine maintenance contract work.
  • Obtain material samples for analysis and assist with routine lab testing.
  • Perform data entry and computer-aided analysis.
  • Perform mechanical and electrical repairs.
  • Conduct survey work such as positioning rod and chain.
  • Perform traffic counts and gather related traffic and accident data.
  • Prepare base sheets, details, specifications, and estimates for landscape construction projects.
  • Process various construction-related documents and maintain project records.
  • Use drafting equipment and perform hand or computer-aided drafting and calculating work.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in an engineering or related science degree program in an accredited college or university accepted by TX PELS.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age and currently enrolled in high school or any institution of higher education.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficient skill in maintaining a safe working relationship.
  • Some skill in research and analysis methodologies.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform data entry.
